KMCA’s Annual Convention started with a round of golf, clay shoot and women’s welcome Wednesday. Members that elected to attend these events spent the afternoon enjoying the beautiful weather, lunch and conversation.

The afternoon was followed by the Board of Directors Meeting. In the evening attendees had the opportunity to mingle over drinks and delicious food at the Kansas Turnpike Authority Reception.

Thursday attendees were greeted by the Kansas State University Pep Band. Their performance opened the morning on a light and positive note. During breakfast, keynote speaker Aaron Davis focused on the importance of a champion attitude for your life. He shared three key points;

• Lose the negative/pessimistic attitude because it’s hard to win in business or life when your attitude is constantly negative or pessimistic.

• Lose the negative/pessimistic people or places by creating boundaries and barriers to protect your attitude and peace-of-mind.

• Lose the horrible habit of procrastination and get things done now. There is always a cost to procrastination, what is it costing you?

This year’s educational sessions included Rebecca Brewster from ATRI, Esther Goetsch from Truckers Against Trafficking, Verlen Larsen from PeopleNet, an ELD Carrier Panel and the annual regulatory panel. This year we also heard from Tom Whitaker, KMCA’s executive director where he updated attendees on the state of the industry.

In addition to educational sessions attendees could participate in the spouse’s function trip to Locked Manhattan, Bunko, an ice cream social and explore exhibit booths.

Some attendees had the opportunity to attend an exclusive event at the Flint Hills Discovery Center as part of their Capital Club membership.

“The Capital Club is open to all members of our association. You can join by making a $200 yearly donation to KMCA’s PRO TRUCK PAC,” said Tom Whitaker, Executive Director of KMCA. “Members of the Capital Club can look forward to an exclusive event each year at convention and they receive a collectible lapel pin for each year they are members.” Contributions to KMCA’s Political Action Committee helps the Kansas trucking industry participate in the Kansas political process.

After the exclusive reception, all convention attendees met for a social reception prior to the banquet. During the banquet, Mike Short was presented with a crystal truck to recognize his year as KMCA’s President; Lori Borgan was recognized as the 2016 – 2017 KMCA President. The evening ended with entertainment by Ashley McBryde who dazzled the crowd with her singing, lyrics and sense of humor.

The final day of convention attendees joined for breakfast and the annual regulatory panel with representation for the Kansas Highway Patrol, FMCSA and Kansas Corporation Commission. Attendees were able to ask questions and discuss regulatory issues. After breakfast had ended another KMCA Convention was successfully on the books but not without our sponsors, attendees and all those that helped make the event run smoothly.
