2016 Truck Driving Championships

DRIVERS COMPETE FOR TOP HONORS AT KMCA’S PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Topeka, Kan. –  89 Drivers from across the state met in Topeka to compete for the top honors in the 2016 Kansas Professional Truck Driving Championships on June 17 and 18. In order to compete, a driver must be accident free for 12 months. The competition consisted of nine classes. Each participant had to complete a vehicle inspection, written test and a six-part driving challenge.

Awards were presented during a banquet on Saturday night. The 2016 Grand Champion driver was Jimmie Wisley, YRC Freight, Wichita, KS. He had the highest point total overall. He has been driving for 25 years with 1.3 million safe driving miles.

The Ronald E Williams Rookie of the Year Award is given to the first-year contestant who displays an outstanding attitude and a good driving performance. The competition had 24 rookies compete for the honor. Jason Ramsdell, FedEx Freight Inc., Kansas City, KS was named the 2016 Rookie of the Year.

There were 9 companies in contention for the large and small team trophies this year.  The top three drivers from each of these companies are stacked up against each other to determine the highest point total for the entire competition. The Large Team Champions were FedEx Freight Inc., Kansas City, KS and the Small Team Champions were Great Plains Trucking Inc, Salina, KS.

This year, a volunteer award was presented to an outstanding volunteer during the championships. The award was presented to Sgt. Pauline Ferguson, of the Kansas Highway Patrol, who has been a volunteer to the Championships since 1995.

The top place of each class will go on to compete at the National Truck Driving Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Kansas Truck Driving Championships are sponsored by the Kansas Motor Carriers Association and the Kansas Safety Management Council.

The Ronald E Williams Rookie of the Year Award is given to the first-year contestant who displays an outstanding attitude and a good driving performance. The competition had 15 rookies compete for the honor. Allie Hughes, Old Dominion Freight was named the 2015 Rookie of the Year.

There were 10 companies in contention for the team trophy this year. The top three drivers from each of these companies are stacked up against each other to determine the highest point total for the entire competition. Companies included: Con-way Freight, Convoy Systems, FedEx Freight, UPS Freight, Wal-Mart Transportation LLC, Old Dominion Freight Lines, Holland Inc., Girton Propane Service Inc., YRC Freight and Great Plains Trucking. The Team Champions award was presented to FedEx Freight.

This year, a volunteer award was presented to an outstanding volunteer during the championships. The award was presented to Lori Borgan, Kansas City KS, who has held the Championships chairman position for the past two years.

The top place of each class will go on to compete at the National Truck Driving Championships in St. Louis Missouri. The Kansas Truck Driving Championships are sponsored by the Kansas Motor Carrier Association and the Kansas Safety Management Council.
