KMCA's Call on Washington

The Kansas Motor Carriers Association and eight member companies made their way to Washington D.C. to for the bi-annual Call on Washington where attendees were able to meet with Congressional Leaders about policy positions for the Kansas Trucking Industry.

Before meeting with Kansas Congressional leaders, the group visited the American Trucking Associations for a briefing on the efforts of ATA.

“During our briefing with ATA it allowed for discussion about the current status of ATA’s efforts, in addition it gave us an idea of how the political climate was in D.C. before meeting with members of Congress,” said Tom Whitaker, Executive Director of KMCA.

During the meetings, KMCA and members shared their concerns on multiple topics that are important to the industry that included: regulatory reform, tax reform, transportation infrastructure, driver shortage, driver background checks, clarifying preemption on FAAAA and productivity

While some of these topics were more familiar to some than others, overall the content of the meetings was well received.

“One of the best things we can do, is become a resource for our Congressional Leaders to help provide them direction when they need it,” said Whitaker.

Also during the Call on Washington, attendees were able to attend the swearing in of Congressman Ron Estes who won the special election for Kansas’ 4th District.

“It was a wonderful experience to get to attend the swearing in of Representative Estes. In all my years working with the legislature, I’ve never attended such an event. We were honored to be invited,” said Whitaker.

Members that attended the Call on Washington included Janice and Edsel Smith - EJ Trucking, LLC, Jeff Hill – MSS Transport Inc., Lori Borgan – Convoy Systems LLC, Terry Budimlija – YRC Freight, Inc., Sean Saunders – YRC Freight, Inc., Paul Carroll – Cornejo & Sons LLC and John Prather - V&M Transport Inc. Thank you to YRC Worldwide for their sponsorship of the Tuesday night dinner.

“We are thankful that each of the attendees could take the time to travel to D.C. to help us with the Call on Washington, said Melissa Kershner, KMCA Director of Governmental Relations and Safety, their attendance is vital to the success of the Call on Washington and we could not do it without them.

The next Call on Washington event will be in May 14-16, 2019. Details are to be determined.
